The Dingyuan was an imposing ironclad battleship that served as the proud flagship of the Chinese Beiyang Fleet. She was the trailblazing vessel of her class, consisting of only one other formidable warship, Zhenyuan, both of which were expertly crafted in Germany during the early 1880s. Delivery of these two mighty ironclads was significantly delayed due to the Sino-French War of 1884-1885. The ships boasted a main battery of four massive 12-inch (305 mm) guns mounted in a pair of gun turrets, making them the most formidable warships dominating East Asian waters at that time.
