Originally this bas-relief together with another one and some other decorative pieces, where collocated in the choir of the Basilica of Saint-Sernin. Alexandre du Mège, one of the restorers, incorporated it into the interior wall of the ambulatory. The original work, in marble, can be attributed to Bernard Gilduin, who sculpted the altar table consecrated in 1096. The Christ in Majesty appears beardless in accordance with the classical model. It has been executed on a plane surface and takes inspiration from both late antiquity and the decorative style of Carolingian ivory work.
