Notes The man who commissioned this building, Samuel Insull, formed Commonwealth Edison. When this building opened, water from the Chicago River was pumped inside for the hydraulic pumps that raised and lowered the stage.   Did You Know? When this building was erected, the intention was for rent in the skyscraper to support the opera. But it opened just before the stock market crash, and both went bankrupt.
