Civil War Carbine Cartridge Box Insert

Civil War Carbine Cartridge Box Insert

Special cartridge boxes were made during the American Civil War to hold carbine ammunition. Unlike the musket boxes, which had tin containers inside to hold arsenal packs and loose ammunition, the carbine box had separate cylindrical cavities to hold individual cartridges ready for use, and to protect them from rattling around excessively. Often these blocks were made of wood, and sometimes of tin. I made one to be 3D printed. Not historically accurate, of course, but good for personal use or in shooting in the North-South Skirmish Association (www.n-ssa.org). I designed this so that you must print 2 of them to fit side-by-side in the cartridge box, instead of one long one (as was used in period). In this way it would print on my 6" x 6" bed. The holes are sized .7" in diameter, and so will accept cartridges for the Smith Carbine as well as the Sharps. It will also accept cartridges for .58 muzzle loaders as well. When 2 of these are put into a cartridge box, there are provisions to hold 20 cartridges. Each insert piece holds 10. The .stl file is in millimeters.
