Charles “Chuck” H. Davis, Senior Fellow and Adjunct Professor at Informatics, possesses a one of a kind clarinet mouthpiece. This mouthpiece was hand crafted by a colleague of Davis’s in the 1930’s. Fellow clarinet players often observed the unique sound the mouthpiece made compared to standard designs. Professor Davis wanted to reproduce the mouthpiece using modern 3D scanning and printing technology. Brian McCarthy of The Indiana Institute for Biomedical Imaging Sciences acquired a MicroCT scan of the mouthpiece in November of 2014. The AVL then took this MicroCT data and extracted 3D printable geometry. The AVL worked with Shelley Spicuzza of the Herron Think-It-Make-It-Lab to get several versions of the mouthpiece printed.
