No previous musical experience required - just tap the two shells together to produce a clickety clacky beat.  The Castanets date back to the Ottoman Empire but have since been adopted by Spanish, Sephardic, Swiss and Portugese music cultures. It is a basic percussive instrument used to create mid to high range tapping and clicking sounds.
