This chess set is utilized in xscreensaver programs such as "endgame" on Linux systems and originates from an older program called "glChess". As all xscreensaver programs are open-source, the modeling data only needed recasting from OpenGL calls to STL format. The result was two sets of STL files - one "modern", and one "classic". However, the "modern_knight" file was non-manifold, which led to it being withheld from distribution until fixed. Moreover, the set's source code, also open-source under GPL, has been revised to ensure each piece is manifold. The "classic_king", initially a mesh with an embedded cross, was replaced with a modified version that's manifold. New additions include "classic_knight_3", which offers a more stylized look that aligns with the set's theme better. Printing these pieces may require adjustments in slicer settings due to overhang issues causing difficulty in generating good support structures. To avoid this, a derivative Thing #335658 was created with modified overhangs at 45 degrees, eliminating the need for support structures. However, these pieces are sized slightly smaller than standard chess pieces, necessitating a 125% resize before printing. For optimal print results, it's advised to print pieces in groups, particularly tall ones that require slower printing speeds to allow each layer time to solidify. The set also includes a "cooling_tower" piece to help regulate temperature during the printing process by forcing the printer to move away from the tallest piece after each layer is printed.
