Coelacanth Fish Scale Design

Coelacanth Fish Scale Design

thingiverse

The unique defense mechanisms of the coelacanth, a lobe-finned fish termed a “living fossil.” This defense is provided by primitive elasmoid scales having a rare double-twisted Bouligand structure of lamellae which provides extraordinary resistance to deformation without failure. Coelacanth fish scales form bundles which are embedded in a matrix comprising fibers arranged perpendicular to the layered (double-twisted Bouligand) structure that provide added rigidity and resistance to deformation. I wanted to give a shot at trying to make the design on blender, after taking a look at Bioinspired tungsten-copper composites with Bouligand-type architectures mimicking fish scales, Journal of Materials Science & Technology. Also there's two versions one with the top and one without it.
