Connector Webcam - Telescope

Connector Webcam - Telescope

I modified an old Philips SPC900NC to be used as a tool for image capturing with a Meade telescope. So I've designed a connector that fits both the slots of camera and telescope.

The connector is a series of three cylinders that I had to connect with two cones (wich angle is less than 45° so that can be printed without any support material).

These three cylinders, from the larger to the smaller, have the following diameters:

31.4 millimeters (mm)

17.4 mm

11.7 mm

The larger one fits inside the oculars holder of the telescope.

The second and central part passes through the front aperture of the webcam.

The smaller part fits inside the slot where the webcam lenses were, right where the CCD sensor is.

The whole connector measures in lenght 68 mm.

DON'T THROW AWAY THE LENSES OF YOUR WEBCAM!

You can use them to build a tiny cute microscope, as you can see in my other project:

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1005879

Instructions

Disassemble your camera. For the first part, you can follow this good tutorial:

http://nightskyinfocus.com/equipment/philips-spc900nc00-webcam-for-astrophotography/

Re-assemble the webcam without the lenses and the focus adjustment knob.

Carefully push the smaller part of the connector inside the CCD slot of the webcam. You may try to tighten the connector twisting it, but don't push it hard, we don't want to break the circuits.

Now you mount the camera with the connector on the telescope. I didn't want my connector to scratch my telescope's slot for oculars, so this part of the connector exits and enters with no friction.

I am using this webcam and telescope with Stellarium and WxAstrocapture, both free and great softwares, with an old Eeepc netbook and Windows Xp.

DON'T THROW AWAY THE LENSES OF YOUR WEBCAM!

You can use them to build a tiny cute microscope, as you can see in my other project:

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1005879
Category: Physics & Astronomy
