CVC (Consonant Vowel Consonant) Word plates are good for both guided and independent work by preschool and Kindergarten students. Using big curve, little curve, long line, short line, students form the letters that make up the CVC words on the plates. Additional CVC word plates may be designed using the Letter and Word Formation Plates listed on another Thingiverse listing (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1746697) depending on the size of your 3D printer print area. How I Designed This When printing on a single extruder machine, the plates can be made more interesting by pausing and performing a filament change once the base layer has been made. For letters with crossing elements, 4 switches of filament colors with 2 for each stick layer, create an evn more colorful and intuitive letter formation plate. (The picture of BIN has imperfections due to extruder issues unrelated to this project. A new printout and picture will be uploaded soon.) Objectives Students will learn how to spell CVC words by building the words not just from letters but from the component short lines, long lines, large curves and small curves. Subjects English Language Arts Skills Learned (Standards) CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.B Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequences of letters. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.D Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.D Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (consonant-vowel-consonant, or CVC) words.1 (This does not include CVCs ending with /l/, /r/, or /x/.) CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.3.C Read common high-frequency words by sight (e.g., the, of, to, you, she, my, is, are, do, does). Lesson/Activity Duration: CVC Word and Letter Formation Plates can be integrated into current language arts curriculum as a kinesthetic activity or as an independent learning activity. It can range from 1-30 minutes depending on the number of plates created. Preparation: Educator 3D prints the standard little line, big line, little curve and big curve. Educator then prints example CVC word plates or using Thingiverse project (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1746697), 3D models new CVC words matching current curriculum and prints those. Refer to current curriculum for ideas of specific word lists from CVC study or sight words to build more plates. Rubric & Assessment When students have completed building a plate, they can either show it to the teacher. If the classroom is mobile-enabled, students can take a picture to upload to their portfolio.
