Copt Howe / Langdale Boulders are prehistoric carved rocks located in the Great Langdale area of Cumbria, England. The markings found on the stones have similarities to examples found in passage tombs, particularly those in the Boyne Valley, Ireland (dated to around 3000BC). In June 2018, Prof. Richard Bradley and Dr Aaron Watson directed a 11 day excavation of the site, opening 4 trenches. In addition to the excavations, recording also included geophysics and photogrammetry. For further info see Dr Aaron Watson’s dig journal here: http://www.aaronwatson.co.uk/journal/2018/7/17/excavations-at-copt-howe-day-1-the-project-begins This low poly model created from 17 images captured on day 9 (25/6/18), shows trench 1 about 5m from the carved surface. Closer photography couldn’t be captured without impacting ongoing recording (time lapse imagery). The most intriguing aspect of the markings on this stone, is the differences between the motifs. Some are precise whilst others appear are crudely executed.
