I use these ceramic mugs for lunch at work because i don't like heating my food up in plastic containers. But, I've managed to damage a couple of them over time by impacting the mugs in various ways. One completely shattered when I clumsily clanked it into a granite counter. This protects from these kinds of impacts.

Recently I accidentally did about a 2 foot drop test on a concrete floor with this protector. The mug bounced, but amazingly there was no damage! I am sure a little luck was involved, but there is no way it would have survived without this.

Print instructions

Category: Kitchen & Dining Print Settings

Rafts: No

Supports: No

Infill: ~10%

Notes:

I printed mine with PETG with just one perimeter and 10% infill. My layers were .3mm and i used 4 top and bottom layers. I cranked up my extrusion factor about 8% for good measure to make sure the single perimeters were a little extra thick. With a 50mm/s print speed it took about 4.5 hours.

I strongly suggest using PETG because of its flexibility and strong layer bonds. Also, since the outside of the mug can sometimes get hot when being microwaved, petg will handle that way better than PLA. Printing one perimeter thick witth low infill will give a corrugated effect that will provide cushioning. Also makes for a neat visual effect if you use a translucent material!

Post-Printing

It is designed to be a little tight. The first time you put the mug in, it probably won't rest fully on the bottom without a bit of pressure. You can either soften the plastic a little with a heat gun or hot water and then put the mug in to get that perfect fit - or you could just use it and after a couple trips through the microwave with a warm mug, it will eventually conform perfectly.
