The problem with self supporting outdoor umbrella stands is the base is large and heavy. Not a huge problem unless you are wanting to put the umbrella in a place where the base just doesn't fit or work. Here is a fix I made to allow the stand to take up a small footprint on a bridge over a pond by fixing the base to the bridge. The Costco umbrella stand I have threads into their base. I have simply reproduced those threads and added holes for screwing the base to the bridge/deck. I am not sure how strong this has to be so I have made mine out of the strongest heat resistant filament I have, carbon infused poly carbonate. Other materials might work, especially if your umbrella doesn't see extreme wind conditions. I have also made a ring to go inside the umbrella support to keep the pole centered when the locking screws are tightened.
