Our team proposes an electromechanical ventilator based on a modified bag-valve mask (BVM). We have differentiated our design from others that use BVM’s in that we have added an independent, redundant bag as a safety in the event of failure (motor/drive, rupture, failure to rebound, or unexpected movement). A failure could be detected by various pressure or flow sensors integrated into the system. In the event of a failure, the system can operate in a single bag mode. The use of 2 BVM's reduces cycle load on the silicone materials, increase flow rates with shorter strokes, and could provide constant positive pressure by computer control of the cycling phases between drives.
