Its name comes from a version of the weapon improved by Zhuge Liang (181-234), a famous military leader and prime minister of the kingdom of Shu during the Three Kingdoms period; Chu Ko Nu literally means "Zhuge's crossbow". The soldiers who wielded the weapon were named after him. That is why they were called "chu ko nu" foot soldiers.
