Curon's Bell Tower

The mysterious submerged village of Curon Venosta recently emerged from the water of Lake Resia showing the current state of the village after years from the day it was submerged.    The bell tower could finally be appreciated up-close from the villagers and curious tourists even though just for a short time.  The story of the village and its world widely famous church begins in 1357, when the Church was built for the first time. It was later on renamed after “Curon” and became a symbol of the small village until nowadays. The bell tower emerging from the water of Lake Resia is actually the only part remaining of the whole structure. The remaining Church can be reached via lake during the summer and also appreciated more up-close during the winter when the lake freezes. The Church entered the hearts of the villagers, so much that the government periodically restored the bell tower in order to keep it in good shape. The village disappeared underwater in 1950, when authorities decided to create a dam which would join two nearby lakes. Most of the residents did not agree on the matter but the dam was built and the village submerged. The old village now rests 22 metres underwater, while the new village was built not far from the ancient one.  The only thing remaining and showing the underwater presence of the village is the bell tower. That tower that now became the symbol of this mysterious village. Legend says that the bells of the famous Church still ring during the coldest winter nights. Those bells were removed in 1959 when the village was almost completely demolished to leave space for the new lake.
