Custom Fishing Lures

Custom Fishing Lures

thingiverse

In this project, students exercise their understandings of animal behavior and ecology and design a custom fishing lure that is designed to attract and catch a specific kind of fish. This lesson can be used to help teach and assess proficiency in NGSS standards such as: MS.LS1.8 MS.LS2.2 The Next Generation Science Standards contain explicit standards related to: Ecology, food chains, trophic levels, and energy transfer through the ecosystems as well as structure/function of organisms, information processing and animal behavior. This project allows students to consider how understandings of a food chain and species behavior can influence a recreational/commercial activity such as fishing. Learning Benchmarks: 1. Students will know which species of fish inhabit (or are likely to inhabit) a body of water near them. 2. Students will know aquatic ecology concepts including details of a single species of fish (habitat, behavior, food type, etc). 3. Students will be able to produce a digital design of a fishing lure that is targeted and appropriate for one of the individual fish species studied. 4. Students will be able to 3D print the custom fishing lure, including post print processing and finishing.
