Customizable Plant Labels

Customizable Plant Labels

My wife is growing herbs and vegetables again, and unlike last year this time I want to know what we're actually harvesting…

I liked @Dave's plant labels, for their simplicity. However, it's only a fixed--and limited--set of labels, so that didn't really work for me.

So I spent some quality time with OpenSCAD to write a script that can generate labels in different sizes and with different text. I mark it as a Remix, to give @Dave credit for the inspiration.

Uh… wait… OpenSCAD? What's that?! Do I need to learn how to write code?

No, you don't! It's actually very simple, and you don't need to “speak SCAD” to create your very own plant labels.

Just check out the PDF file with a step-by-step guide I uploaded here (Files page>Other files), to see how easy it is to design customized plant labels per your specs.

The key parameters to change are:

The text on your label.

Label size. The default is 70mm.

I have also uploaded a .3mf project file, with a filament change at the appropriate place so you can get a two color print. Just replace the STL that is in the .3mf file with the STL you created from OpenSCAD.

A word of caution: If the label is sized too small and the text is long, it may be too small to slice correctly. Selecting Detect thin walls in PrusaSlicer may help, or you may have to make the label larger.

If you like what I'm doing…

…consider buying me a coffee.
