Hey all I designed this penguin a few days ago since I was looking for a cute penguin to print as a specialty gift but couldn't find what I was looking for. I tried to go for a bit of a minimalistic look here, but yet one that would still be cute and playful or something like that! Perfect gift idea for young child, girl friend, etc.... I drew inspiration from few reference images of baby penguins I found on Google Images, but for the most part the design is pretty organic and yea ~ The penguin I made at 200mm tall is rather large, but i can imagine this working as a bit of a smaller thing as well. Of course, you won't be able to put as much stuff into the drawer in front, but it will still be pretty nice. Hope you enjoy the model! If you guys want I can post autocad file too. Creative commons license is just whatever, really don't necessary to give me credit although it is pretty cool if you do :) Do whatever you like with it, hope you like it. That is what I hope for by sharing it with the world! Print Settings Printer Brand: RepRap Printer: P802M Rafts: No Supports: Yes Resolution: 0.2mm Z Infill: 15% Notes: So, as can probably be seen from the photos, one of the ends of the flippers is glued on. The support material that Cura generates is probably not enough, and/or the printer made a mistake printing the very thin support, and thus it fell over. Suggest you to watch the printer during this time, and maybe use hotglue to secure it if necessary. Beak is hard to print properly, do it veryyyy slowly like 20mm/s and then you still probably need to file it or sand it to make it round. maybe reduce the flowrate helps? Printed at around 75mm/s, 175mm/s tool travel, using some PLA filaments at around 220C. About 48H total print time, probably a bit less than that! I started printing on 12am tuesday and i finish everything on end of Wednesday if it give you some perspective. Using Cura 15.04 something, Windows 10 and Repetier Host applications. I scaled the body 0.686, beak 0.686, face 0.686, and the belly 0.675. This gives a 200mm 20cm tall penguin, costing around 1kg of material in total. Maybe a little bit less. Post-Printing Just a few notes... After printing it, I used some very rough sandpaper 40 grit to remove the edges left by Cura's Line support material. Finish it off with some 220 grit. The drawer may be a little loose after this. Thus you can layer some Scotch tape on the bottom in the middle of the drawer until 25layer or so, then it will be tighter :) Of course, by request, I can probably add some mechanism to hold the drawer in for you if you would like! just tell me what you think is good. Or you can do it and ill post it. The face is a tight fit, may need to drill the holes out a little for better fit. make sure sand down everything well. You don't need to glue it on, probably will not ever come off even if you want to! I used epoxy glue to mount the beak. it sticks well, and any $1 epoxy will work wonders. How I Designed This A while ago I need to make a special gift for someone on the 3D printer, a penguin. However because I wanted it to be unique and special, and because there are no suitable model on the Internet, at least that I could find, I decided to design my own! I firstly made it a goal to make a very cute and adorable shape, so I took the inspiration from Google, the baby penguin photos! Like the body form and the face colour shape. Modelling the basic form in Autodesk 3DS Max 2016, I exported it to Fusion 360 in order to complete the mechanical design part where I made the drawer and the face and the flippers. I decided to create the drawer in the penguin because 1) it would save the material for the infill, 2) because I want this item to be very functional, thus more useful and memorable for the person who enjoy it. Because it is not very small, and I think it is a waste to just have it sit on a shelf. I think that this way I can create the item that is not only artistically pleasing, but also functional, so it can be placed in a place where you see it everyday :) So I think the secret compartment is pretty cool. I know I would make one for myself holding some coin and SD card!! Total modelling time it is not too long.
