The Dash 8 emerged from the Dash 7 series, boasting short takeoff and landing capabilities. It serves as a twin-engine turbo-prop regional aircraft for short to medium routes, seating up to 39 passengers in its 100 series. Focusing on cruise and economy performance, the Dash 8 has become popular among small to medium-sized carriers and airlines. Over 1,000 orders have been placed, with Bombardier predicting sales to reach approximately 1,200 by 2016. However, production of the 100 series ceased in 2005; the 200, 300, and 400 series are still being produced. There are plans for a possible stretched version (500 or 600) of the 400 series in development. De Havilland sold Dash 8's production and licensing rights to Bombardier.
