Delphinium, a plant genus with 300 species, is native to the Northern Hemisphere and tropical African highlands. Its toxicity affects humans and livestock alike. The common name 'larkspur' is shared with Consolida's perennial Delphinium species and annual species. Molecular data indicates that Consolida, as well as Aconitella, are embedded within Delphinium. The genus name originates from the ancient Greek word for larkspur ('delphinion') and Latin for dolphin, referring to the nectary's shape.
