I mount a dial indicator on a stock Monoprice Maker Select or Wanhao Duplicator i3 by attaching it to the side of the extruder stepper motor. The indicator I use has a 9.5 mm diameter stem and a total length from its base to the tip of about 60 mm, which makes for a decent fit on the extruder.
