Dice and Mini Box with Rolling Tray

A dice box I designed in preparation for my party's first DnD campaign. I wanted room for at least 2 sets of dice, a mini, and a rolling tray with felt/foam lined pockets to prevent the contents from rattling around.

The overall size of the box was driven by the rolling tray in the lid. After trying a few different sizes, I decided on 7" x 5". I thought it was a good compromise between having enough rolling area without taking up too much space on the table. The two long pockets can each hold a set of standard dice, and two center pockets can each hold 1-2 minis (depending on the size) or more dice.

Foam pieces cushion the bottom of the pockets, and I lined the rolling tray with felt. When the lid is on the box, it slightly compresses the dice into the foam, holding them in place even if the box is shaken around. Since the center pockets are deeper, I'd recommend using two pieces of foam if you want to store dice in there.

The lid is held on via 1/4" x 3/16" circular neodymium magnets. The easiest way to get it off is to push on one corner to slide the magnets away from each other, and then it'll easily lift away. The magnets I used were overkill, you could easily use a weaker set if you prefer.

I'd recommend carefully checking the first time you put a mini in the box. If a mini is large enough it'll be compressed into the lining foam when the lid is attached. The foam is soft enough that it shouldn't be an issue, but I'd be mindful of any large or fragile minis.

Printing Dual-Color Designs

I wanted to try something new (for me) for these prints, so I decided to try out a 2-color print using the procedure in this PrusaPrinters post. The technique relies on Prusa's M600 command to pause the print and wait for a filament change. You should be able to adapt the procedure using similar pause / filament change commands on other printers. I've attached my PrusaSlicer.3mf files in case anyone wants them for reference.

I initially made each design only a single layer, but you could see the color of the rest of the lid through any first-layer imperfections. Although it required more filament changes, I found printing 2 layers of the design gave more consistent results.

Members of my DnD party wanted designs in different colors, but I didn't want to purchase that many full spools of filament. I ended up using a sample pack of 3D pen PLA I found on Amazon. It wasn't the best quality, but it came in a bunch of different colors and worked well in this case.

Materials Used

Magnets: https://totalelement.com/collections/disc-magnets/products/1-4-x-3-16-inch-strong-neodymium-rare-earth-disc-magnets-n52-42-pack

Foam: https://www.mcmaster.com/86225K14/

Felt (variety pack): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IQMOO3M

Colored filament (for inlay designs): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z3D4H45?th=1

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

Prusa

Printer:

I3 MK3S

Rafts:

No

Supports:

No

Resolution:

.30

Infill:

10%

Filament: N/A PLA

N/A

Notes:

Printed with a 0.6mm nozzle on my textured PEI powder coated build sheet
Category: Toy & Game Accessories
