2021_08_06: This machine mounts a file and drives it up and down to do detail work in corners or inside enclosed shapes. Die filers are common but tend to be bulky so I made a little benchtop version. It's great for reaching places that a Rout-a-Burr can't get to. Parts you will need: -DC motor; anything between 6 and 24v is good enough. My motor is 1.4 in. dia. or 35.6mm; use this or a smaller one wrapped with electrical tape to get it centered in the motor mount. -2: Kingsea Brass Weight 10mm Widen 12mm Hex Wheel Hubs Adapters from Amazon. One presses into Driven_Gear_02 and the other into Crank_Disk_02. These provide a secure locations for setscrews. -50mm of 6mm shaft -3: bearings: 6mm i.d. x 16mm o.d. -3: M3 x 10mm setscrews to hold bearings in place in Gearbox_Frame_16mm_05 -2: M4 x 10mm setscrews to hold file in Piston_03 -1: M4 x 10 SHCS for top of Conn_Rod_02 -4: M4 x 8mm SHCS to fasten Piston_Keepers to Cylinder -7: M4 x 10mm FHMS and nuts to fasten parts to base -2: M4 x 10mm FHMS and nuts to fasten table to A_Frame_02 -2: M4 x 16mm FHMS and nuts to fasten Cylinder_04 to A_Frame_02 -2: M4 x 10mm SHCS to attach motor_Mount_Upper to Motor_Mount_Lower -Hook-up wire and a power supply for the motor. -1: 6 in. diameter x 3/16 or thicker disk of plywood or plexiglass, available at Tap Plastics Here's a short video of the die filer in action: https://www.flickr.com/photos/steamboat_ed/51358988760/in/dateposted-public/ Tools you'll need to finish the die filer: -M3 and M4 taps -Mototool or drill press to make 2: 4mm holes in work table and to make a slot to clear the file. -Rout-a-Burr and sandpaper 2021_08_08: I've noticed it gets a little wobbly with a large file mounted so I've added Stiffener_01. This bolts to a tab I've added to one side of A_Frame_04 with an M4 x 8mm SHCS and nut. At the bottom you can either drill a 4mm hole in the base and add a bolt or print Base_04 which has provision for a flat head screw beneath. See photos 4 and 5 for a good look. 2021_08_18: Recovering from surgery; will design a larger one after I get stitches out. Oh and I'm broke so... https://www.patreon.com/Steamboat_Ed?fan_landing=true 2012_08_22 Added Template_02.stl. Print this and use it as a drill guide to make a table out of plywood or whatever. Print one of the inserts for the large hole and then grind the hole to match the insert and you're good to go. If you don't want to make a work table from wood or plexiglas you can print one but it will take around 8 hours: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4982946 I've also uploaded three different inserts but more may follow. Each is specific for one shape of file: -Insert_Round_01 -Insert_Triangle_01 -Insert_Rectangle_02 If you have the time go ahead and print Top_Plate_04 and you're all set.
