One of the biggest challenges in recent years has been for people to find a balance between quality time with family and socializing with friends. With the advent of handheld computing devices, it has become even more of a struggle within the place once solely reserved for family. Our virtual hideaways can be accessed through a handheld screen, and many families have begun falling apart at the seams because of it. My resolution for this New Year has been to spend more time with family while being disconnected from distractions. Dinner Time Out will aid in those efforts by becoming a central hub contained within the place which the family most commonly gathers; the dinner table. Dinner Time Out is meant to be placed at the center of the dinner table and contains 8 compartments that slide out and can hold your family’s cell phones safely within it. Once all the devices are safely tucked inside of it, you can press a button opposite the tray containing your device and it will slide the tray outward for easy access. I believe this can be a key factor in bringing families like mine closer together so that we may once again engage in what communication devices have led us away from; True communication. Dinner Time Out can be used as a reward system if your children need a little extra incentive to disconnect. For instance, every meal they go without asking for their phone can lead to a reduction in daily chores, or maybe even an extra half hour of free-time before bed. If they can’t manage to go a whole meal without checking their device, you can choose the consequence they will face. They’ll learn to think twice about checking their text messages when it means they will have to wash dishes by hand or clean out the litter box. The possibilities are only as finite as your imagination. With Dinner Time Out, your family time can become more than just sitting around staring at a screen.
