I've always been on the hunt for a spool that ticks all my boxes. I need one that's lightweight, yet robust enough to get the job done. It should be able to hold at least 15 meters of strong, thick cord without any issues. When wearing a neoprene glove, it's essential that the middle hole is large enough for my thumb to fit comfortably in there. The spool also needs to be compact enough so I can easily form a loop around it using just my thumb and forefinger. To design this dream spool, I used Autodesk Fusion 360. The parametric design makes it easy to adjust the width or height of the spool by simply tweaking the h_spool parameter. Check out the photo for an example - there's a 30 mm wide version with 13 meters of long, relatively thick (about 3 mm) utility cord. To assemble this beauty, all I need to do is screw the two halves together. The thread is long enough to provide a secure hold, but if I want to make sure it stays in place, I can print it from ABS and then dip the male thread in acetone for extra security.
