DIY Helicopter Collective Hall Effect

DIY Helicopter Collective Hall Effect

This is an easily built collective for helicopters in flight simulators. No bearings are required as the friction device is also the main bearing. It features a ratiometric/linear hall device in the base instead of a potentiometer thus removing unnecessary gears etc. This also improves life. Easy friction adjustment on the fly. Rotating single throttle on the shaft connects to a potentiometer via a spline adaptor. Very robust. General purpose bearing grease. Not silicone paste. 1 x small tension spring to suit. My spring is about 8.5 mm OD, 0.9mm wire, 19 turns and 17mm long when compressed not including hooks. May need to be stronger but you can always replace it. 3 x 450mm hookup wire, preferably red, black and some other color. 1 x ratiometric/linear hall device.(https://www.amazon.com/linear-hall-effect-sensor/s?k=linear+hall+effect+sensor) Note: Cheap devices from China can be used but they have a limitation. Typically they output 1-4v deviation. If you use them the micro will have to scale accordingly. High quality devices often give rail to rail output, 0-5v. This of course is better but not necessarily better in use. CA glue and hot glue. Head components 2 x 20mm M3 bolts (head to shaft fixing) 6 x 4g 10-12mm countersunk screws 2 x 10-20k linear potentiometer, square type. Use whatever micro you want but here is my suggestion: Electronic Parts 1 x Arduino Pro Micro ATmega32U4 5V 16MHz Note: There are two ways to build. Shift registers or diode matrix. For Shift Register version: 2 x 74HC165 shift register. 16 x 10k 1/4 watt resistor. small prototype board for two x 74HC165. This may not be necessary if you have access to a premade PCB. For Diode matrix version: 16 x 1N914/1N4148 etc. small signal diodes. 1 x 2m micro USB cable. Circuit schematic included for both versions. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LgLs11uxr6Kw2wu4dI2pKZz1946jveNh/view?usp=sharing Stripboard layout pdf https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-7FzcDauzXSg5KHgETWxCuXpTHhz8or_/view?usp=sharing Base assembly Part 1: https://youtu.be/5NGa3CJ-V0I Base assembly Part 2: https://youtu.be/Bt-WBsHY-5E Base assembly Part 3: https://youtu.be/93AswYfl6no Grip Assembly Part 4: https://youtu.be/XCIGcipIXr0 Hat Switch Part 5: https://youtu.be/zOGZupHq1AI Programming Using MMJoy2 Part 6: https://youtu.be/YtiqsA0MQ_c Hobby Tech Gear made some great videos about this: Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxuDD6lyDxw&t=1207s Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auUpT2t_DqA Part 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3k8beZaHbY&t=2091s
