This is a remix of my DNA / RNA manipulative set, which can be found here http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1259352

A video overview can be found here, https://youtu.be/eVgUMtTA06c

Lesson Plans and lab work is now available on my teacher pay teacher site, https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/3D-Printable-DNA-RNA-Manipulative-Lab-1-3452084

When I presented the original version to my biology class, students asked if there was a way to display or string the pieces together to stabilize them. We thought more about it, and I realized that these could be be strung together like a necklaces. They could also be displayed for science fairs and presentations.

So I remixed the set to include 3 mm holes through all the pieces so you can thread floss through them.

You can print these pieces in different colors like I did in the DNA / RNA set, I just prototype them in lime green.
If you want to help students see how A, T and C, G pair together, print the tiles in two different contrasting colors. This way they can see how each pair together.

If you want to display these on the whiteboard, use flexible magnetic tape to stick these on the whiteboard.

REVISIONS FOR V2 Files

Dis D V2 12.stl: The shape was changed to prevent students from fitting the prior D piece together with the A in the wrong location.

Dis 35 V2.stl: The 3 prime and 5 prime pieces have been reshaped.

Dis A V2 6.stl: The A piece is now the larger one to better match the chemical size. The A lettering has been moved to make room for the holes for the string.

Dis T V2 6.stl & Dis U V2.stl: Both have been corrected to be smaller then A.

Dis G V2 6.stl: The odd offset has been corrected, and letter moved.

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

LulzBot

Printer:

TAZ 5

Rafts:

No

Supports:

No

Resolution:

02-0.3 mm

Infill:

5%

Notes:

Print A, T, C, G different colors.rnPrint R,U the same color.rnPrint P, D in the color you have the most ofrnthe 3 - 5 prime holding block should be printed in a neutral color. For visual cues, make a color key for your students. rnrnFor a better color contrast and visual aid, print the pieces in two colors.rnrnPrint A with color 1, switch to color 2. Then on the next batch print T starting with color 2, then switch to color 1. Do the same procedure for C & G, D & P to create a clear color matching scheme.

Post-Printing

Break all sharp edges, use a 3 mm hand drill to clean out any clogged holes.

How I Designed This

DNA / RNA manipulative remix

This was designed from the original files in TinkerCAD.I put 2 3 mm holes though the pieces to provide a way to string them all together. rnrn

Custom Section

Project: Display DNA / RNA sequence

For this project, I wanted a way to display a students DNA / RNA sequence for science fairs or presentations. rnrnBy putting holes through the pieces, students can string them together for a science fair project or presentation.rnrn

Objectives

Students demonstrate their understanding of DNA, RNA, and genetics.rnStudents produce a model to demonstrate scientific knowledge for public presentation. rnStudents presents a professional presentation for a varied audience. rnStudents presents genetic research to a professional audience. rn

Audiences

High School biology, AP bio, College biology, College genetics, genetic councilors and medical professionals.

Preparation

Students should understand DNA/ RNA, and genetics.rnStudents should prepare their research, and plan out how to model it with this set. rnStudents should 3Dprint enough base pairs to meet their display needs.

Steps

This set can be used as a display piece for genetic research. rnAfter conducting your research, use this set to produce a physical model for presentations. rnrnUse this set to demonstrate restriction enzymes, cleavage sites, and DNA sequences involved in research.

Results

As a result of this, you should have a product you can take to professional conferences and science presentations.rnrnThe public can inspect your work and model to see the DNA sequence you are working with.
Category: Biology
