Dogū (Japanese: 土偶, literally “earthen figure”) are small humanoid and animal figurines made during the later part of the Jōmon period (14,000–400 BC) of prehistoric Japan. Some scholars theorize the dogū acted as effigies of people, that manifested some kind of sympathetic magic. Due in part to the enigmatic nature of the figurines, there have been numerous theories of non-scientific nature, with some speculating that the physical appearance is connected to the suits and equipment of modern-day astronauts. There are some who believe that certain varieties of the figures with the characteristic goggle-like eyes, actually represent aliens creatures.
