# Introduction Take two of the best things the world has to offer, put them into a shaker, shake it like your life depends on it, and bang, you get Doom Chess! This has been done as a gift to my cousin, and took me 3 months of work and 500 hours of printing time. Of course this includes prototypes, tests, dead-end ideas, etc. It won't take that long to print all the parts, don't worry! # Thanks First things first, this wouldn't have been possible without Thingiverse and all the Things it has to offer. Each original author is credited in the "Credits" section below. In the following sections, details will be given on how and where each part was used or remixed. Let greetz fly to them! This Thing also includes a lot of content that has been created from scratch, mainly the parts needed to stow all the Doom Chess pieces in a closed box. Each section below will detail how to print each part. You'll need at least two different colors, the "black" and the "white" colors for the chess pieces and the board puzzle pieces of course (I used black and gold), but more colors might be used for the other parts. I used 3 more colors: the outline_color is silver, the box_color is rainbow, and the rack_color is orange. # The board The STL files for the board are: 1. Doomchess-Board-Puzzle.stl 2. Doomchess-Board-Outline-Short.stl 3. Doomchess-Board-Outline-Long.stl 4. Doomchess-Board-Outline-Corner.stl *Credits*: File 1. comes unmodified from A., files 2., 3. and 4. are remixed versions of the outline pieces from A. I enhanced the outline pieces so that they attach together and not just to the board itself. The other modification is that there's no longer one outline piece per board piece, the outline pieces spawn to 2 or 3 puzzle pieces instead, to enhance the stability of the board. You'll have to print: 1. 32 white and 32 black pieces of 1. 3. 4 pieces of 2., 3. and 4. (using outline_color) All these parts were printed with 0.12mm precision (to ensure the puzzle pieces would fit nicely together) # The chess pieces The STL files for the chess pieces are: 1. Doomchess-Piece-Pawn.stl 2. Doomchess-Piece-Bishop.stl 3. Doomchess-Piece-Knight.stl 4. Doomchess-Piece-Rook.stl 5. Doomchess-Piece-Queen.stl 6. Doomchess-Piece-King.stl *Credits*: All these pieces use design inspired from A. as their pedestal, as I liked the way the King and Queen had a "triple" pedestal, whereas the other non-pawn pieces had a double pedestal, and the pawn had a simple one. Each piece uses the F. set's top parts, as the Staunton set is nice and well recognized among the chess players. Then, each piece has a doom model builtin, the pawn is doomguy (E.), the bishop, knight and rook are cacodemon (C.), the king is a baron (D.) and the queen is the infamous cyberdemon (B.). I printed all those in 0.12mm, with 40% infill to get a nice "weight" for each piece. I found out 20% infill was not enough for this reason. Also ensure that for tiny areas (for example, the hands of the pawns), the area is filled completely regardless of the infill setting (Print settings > infill > Solid infill threshold area, in PrusaSlicer). The hardest part are the supports. I had a way better experience using PrusaSlicer than Cura on this, as the supports were of way higher quality and had better placements (YMMV). Be prepared however to take 5-10 minutes to carefully remove the supports for each cacodemon-based piece. The hardest part is the mouth of the cacodemon. Don't rush it, take your time. You'll have plenty as the other stuff is printing anyway! You'll need to print, for each black and white color: - 8 pieces of 1. - 2 pieces of 2., 3. and 4. - 1 piece of 5. and 6. # The racks To avoid having the pieces loosely put away in a big box, I've designed racks so that each piece is correctly stowed. The STL files for the racks are: 1. Doomchess-Rack-Pawns-Top.stl 2. Doomchess-Rack-Pawns-Bottom.stl 3. Doomchess-Rack-Pieces-Top.stl 4. Doomchess-Rack-Pieces-Bottom.stl 5. Doomchess-Rack-KingQueen.stl These all have been designed from scratch in Tinkercad. You'll need to print one of each. I used 0.12mm precision here, especially for 1., 2., 3. and 4. to ensure the "top" parts correctly match the "botttom" parts. You can probably print 5. with 0.28mm precision. # The box The STL files for the box are: 1. Doomchess-Box-Main.stl 2. Doomchess-Box-Top.stl *Credits*: The box has been designed from a parametric box (G.), and has been modified to add some pillars and walls to correctly hold the pieces, and the lid has the doom logo (H.) added on it The printing time of 1. is quite gigantic, it took ~35 hours with 0.28mm precision on my Ender 3 Pro. You can probably print with a thicker setting if you have the proper extruder (> 0.4mm) to speed up the print. The piece maxed out my printer's X printbed size, as it is 230.1mm wide, but it worked. Unfortunately I didn't have enough X space remaining to use brim around the first layers, which would have helped preventing warping on the corners. It wasn't that bad though. You can print the top (2.) with a finer setting (I used 0.12mm) to ensure it'll slide nicely on the top of the box. Don't forget in your slicer to setup the color change on the first layer of the text. # Credits A.
