These are strong in both the horizontal and vertical directions - I simply cannot pull them apart "accidentally" no matter how hard I try. A small tab is provided at the edge of the latch which makes it very simple to lift and detach. The mechanism works by using the magnet attraction to hold the parts together, and a ridge/trench mechanism to prevent lateral movement. These work together to hold the mechanism rigid during use and prevent accidental detachment of the laces. The picture is an earlier prototype with 4 holes - there are three in the model provided, giving better spacing.
