Drafting Table / Print Table

When I hear the word ‘print table’ I think of what is commonly called a drafting table. This is my recreation of a tradition old school drafting table (except for it being much smaller). A piece of standard printer paper (8.5 x 11 or A4) fits perfectly on it.

I of course had to over engineer it just for fun. I decided to use a gear and rack type method to both adjust the angle of the work surface as well as the height. This was my first time ever designing gears, so that was a fun challenge. There is radial gear rack built onto the table bracket for the rotating. A gear is trapped between the bracket and the table leg with a knob on the opposite side that you drive the gear with. A drive shaft connects to the opposite side for smooth adjustment. For height adjustment I cut the gear rack shape into the table leg and added the gear pattern to the knob which has a pilot that locates through the table leg and fits nicely into the table bracket to drive it up and down.

I printed all of the pieces on my Prusa i3 MK3S+ except the table top which was slightly too large to fit on the bed. I used a piece of ½ thick black plastic sheet that I used my table saw to cut down to 9.5" x 13". The rest of the pieces were printed with PLA. I added various holes to the pieces in case extra fasteners are desired to make it more rigid or to screw the table down to a fixed surface. I did not find the need to do this on mine as all the pieces fit together quite nicely except for one screw to connect ‘knob2’ to one of the ‘gear’ pieces. You will need to print the following quantities.

Drive x2 (for keeping the two sides moving evenly)

Gear x2 (for rotating)

GearKnob x2 (for height adjustment)

Knob2 x1 (for locking)

Knob x1 (for rotating)

key x1 (for connecting the drives (shafts))

Leg x2

TableBracket x2
