Although it’s been a long time, I still remember that when I first began learning 3D modeling the first model that I wanted to create was of a dragon. Unfortunately, although I tried to create it, I didn’t possess the knowledge or skills to make my idea a reality. My entry in this competition is a long overdue fulfillment of that that dream.Currently I am a student at Rutgers University learning from Dr. Aaron Mazzeo. Our school mascot is the Scarlet Knight so at first it probably seems to be a bit of a betrayal to submit a dragon model to this competition as a knight’s traditional enemy is the dragon. Hopefully I can be forgiven somewhat since my entry depicts an eastern dragon rather than a western one. In the west, dragons were known as evil fire breathing creatures that wreaked havoc on kingdoms and hoarded massive amounts of treasure in their lairs. In the east however, the story was usually very different. Eastern dragons could be every bit as temperamental as their western counterparts, but the people saw them more as benevolent beings rather than divine wrath incarnate. This could in part be attributed to these dragons’ association with water instead of fire. The dragon was also associated with the attributes of wisdom, prosperity, and power. On the model’s pedestal I’ve included these attributes, in addition to other positive traits that I believe students should strive to exemplify or attain. I drew inspiration for this entry largely by looking at dragon statues and costumes used during parades. I’ve also included the pearl that was said to be a dragon’s most precious possession and appears in much artwork depicting these creatures. Since the model contains several small details, ideally it would be created using ABS plastic in a polyjet printer.
