I was invited by a local school to participate in their Egg-Drop science event and this is one of the results. The reason they invited me was because they wanted to do something different this year. Instead of dropping boxes to protect contained eggs they wanted to drop eggs from a drone or multirotor and try to catch and protect the eggs.

This was the second version of our dropping device. (Check out the first one here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:855304) This version uses paper cups, 6mm threaded rod, 4mm nuts and bolts, and a continuous rotation servo motor.

More information at Instructables.com (http://www.instructables.com/id/Dropping-eggs-from-drones-for-fun-and-science/)

Instructions

I printed all of the parts with PLA, two perimeters, 15% infill, 2 solid layers top and bottom. I wanted it to be as light as possible.

I mounted the servo to the top carriage first. Then I measured and cut the threaded rod so that the mounting bracket held the cups below the body of the drone but off of the ground. Next I mounted the custom servo arm on the motor. I used 3 nuts as spacers between the top carriage and the bottom carriage and one more nut with a lock washer to hold the bottom carriage in place. A little locktight kept everything nice and rigid.
Category: R/C Vehicles
