My Son lowes to pull 3 coaches with these trains and therefore abuse them, resulting permanent slipping of the clutch mechanism (wearing out the 6 side star drive and breaking the nylon prongs on final gear hollow shaft).

This model is intended to fix the issue and keeping (a modified) clutch to save the nylon gears just in case of overload.

There are two versions for 1.75 filament axle (a bit wobbly due to the natural curve of it), and one for a 2mm axle (toothpick, carbon rod, drill bit, steel wire and so…), the clutch part is the same for both.

Assembly and print instructions:

Print retainer part in laying direction, clutch with flat side down, wheels as You prefer. Iprinted the wheels upside down which requires supports, but gave a much nicer finish, because when the flat side was against the buildplate, the sides curled up…

Glue the retainer piece on the shaft, then slide the clutch on but do not glue it, it must rotate freely, then glue the wheel on the other side of the shaft, trim shaft as required.

You may have the two plastic prongs already broken off from the final drive of the gearbox (nylon gear), if not You have to break off (I had 2 from the 4 broken see pictures) due to the clutch part is intended to catch on the remaining “fork”.

Install “traction tire” on the wheel then install wheel.

I used simple O rings as traction tires. Size of them: 2,5mm dia, 24mm outer dia, or 2mm dia, 26mm outer dia, or anything between. Your mileage may vary :)

The clutch is strong enough to pull 2 coaches without slipping, with the third one it starts to slip just like the original.

Happy Duplo train repair!
