Snowflakes are individual ice crystals or clusters of ice crystals that descend through the Earth's atmosphere. They originate as snow crystals, which form when tiny supercooled cloud droplets freeze. Snowflakes come in a range of sizes and shapes, with intricate patterns emerging as they pass through varying temperature and humidity zones, making each one generally distinct from others in terms of structure. When surrounded by rime, snowflakes take on the shape of balls known as graupel. Despite being made entirely of clear ice, snowflakes appear white due to the way light is scattered by their small crystal facets.
