Earthquakes are vibrations from the ground that occur when rock masses under tectonic stress break abruptly or undergo an elastic rebound. These phenomena can cause significant damage The vibrations caused by an earthquake propagate in all directions in the form of seismic waves , from the hypocentre or focus of the earthquake. The place on the surface where the waves first arrive , located in the vertical of the hypocentre , is called the epicentre. It produces the maximum release of energy and its effects are more noticeable. From here, the waves propagate across the surface, shaking the ground.
