The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial was designed by famed landscape architect Lawrence Halprin and completed in 1997. The memorial encompasses 7.5 acres and extends 800’ on the southwest bank of the Tidal Basin. It consists of four rooms representing each of Roosevelt’s four terms in office plus a prologue room, which was added in 2001. The statue of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt is located in a niche in the fourth room of the memorial, commemorating Roosevelt’s last term as president and the creation of the United Nations. The 6’-tall bronze statue of the First Lady represents her role as the United States Delegate to the United Nations General Assembly from 1945-1952. A relief of the seal of the United Nations is located on the wall behind the First Lady. Neil Estern, a New York City artist, designed this statue, along with one depicting Roosevelt wearing a cloak that covers his wheelchair with his beloved dog Fala beside him that is located in the third room.
