THIS IS STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION. This is my current project on making my printer safer and quieter: The problem was the sheer amount of cables hanging around the printer, making it a nightmare to change anything on them. I also noticed the original power supply putting out slightly wrong voltage and being very loud (it simply lost my confidence). So I started looking for safe and affordable solutions to this issue. ATX power supplys are very common for PCs, safe and affordable. They also come with the benefit of a sleep-mode pin. This can be used by octoprint. For your ATX choice: • Go with a good quality brand and at least +60% power • Make sure that all rails and plugs are specifically explained in a manual • Power-supplies without cable-management are cheaper but are a mess to deal with. Most cables don't get used. A very helpful website was to me: http://www.instructables.com/id/A-Makers-Guide-to-ATX-Power-Supplies/ Warning: • Don’t connect different power-rails • At every component, take safer choices than needed • Be aware of the max current per power-supply-cable (in my case roughly 5A) and mind your cable diameter • Don’t save on cheap connectors, go on safe side with i.e. https://www.phoenixcontact.com/online/portal/de?uri=pxc-oc-itemdetail:pid=3003017&library=dede&tab=1 • Use ferrules and fuses In my case the printer needed 200W (17A at 12V). I wanted an especially quiet fan and wanted to mind possible future extensions to my printer so I chose: BeQiet PurePower 500W. The larger rail only powers the bed, while the rest is on the second rail. 5V-standby always is on and I use it for my raspberry pi. Toggling power from raspberry pi: By using this plugin you can toggle the standby-pin of your power supply from anywhere by octoprint: https://plugins.octoprint.org/plugins/psucontrol/ • Don’t do this if you are not a professional • Keep your printer under permanent attention
