Used to stop the play on the threaded rod inside the stepper motor housing and bearings. This fixes the missing layers of up to 1.4-1.5mm height on the Z axis. Also shorter to prevent crashes. Cost is about $2 per printer. Print in 80-95% infill, needs to be strong. PLA should be fine? Just remove the top bracket and jog the head up and off the screw, be careful with the hidden spring and how it fits. Drop the parts in and tighten up. Reverse process to put the head back on, take great care to line up the two brass hidden nuts and spring they fit together.
