Germany's powerful armored cruiser shone during World War I with its daring attacks on commercial shipping and allied warships in the Indian Ocean. Between August 1st and November 9th, 1914, it skillfully seized 23 merchant ships and torpedoed Russia's Pearl cruiser as well as France's swift destroyer. While conducting raids, Germany stressed its commitment to observing naval laws and traditions, upholding a high standard of treating prisoners with kindness. Fortunately, not one civilian or captured shipmate lost their life during these operations.
