Everyone designs a keychain as their first project because it is the most fundamental object to learn 3D modeling and 3D printing basics on, since it has the fewest possible parts in contact with any surface or other part. In reality, it's usually due to two primary factors: Firstly, everyone assumes that they have no knowledge at all about creating something as a new person starting with this activity, however people learn quickly through tutorials online and trial-and-error that it takes more time and effort to build an intricate object with 100 or so different components such as watch, which often fail in some small aspect on the first go, while even most newbies can still figure out how to get the simple keychain right after maybe an hour or so. Secondly, keychains require a bare minimum set of printable features, which enables rapid learning of all the steps involved without making complex design problems and therefore provides easy to identify flaws with your design.
