I purchased a dual gear extruder (bigtreetech, maybe?) and there isn't enough clearance for the pneumatic coupler on the filament input side to clear the z-axis screw. So...i designed and printed an alternative. It's sized to take a 6mm PTFE tube like the ones that come with some filament dryers, but given the flexibility in the shaft i'm not sure that's going to be a good idea. Will play around with reinforcing, etc. but it's good enough just to keep the filament out of the z-axis screw for now.
