Endicott Street Brothel Toothbrush

Endicott Street Brothel Toothbrush

sketchfab

This toothbrush made of carved bone was recovered from a privy relating to a brothel that once stood on Endicott Street in the North End of Boston. One of several toothbrushes recovered along with many other artifacts relating to personal hygiene, the handle depicts two snake heads facing eachother as if they are devouring the same prey. Objects like these provide insight to the daily lives of those who lived and worked in Boston’s 19th century red light district, while also conveying a sense of aesthetic and perhaps a sense of humor!
