This design isn't aimed to be best for 3D printing. It is designed to be compatible with existing Igus E07 energy chains. If you want an in my opinion better design take a look at my Igus E2C compatible collection.

E07 Collection

end pieces (male and female)

Note: creating a chain element by using female and male endpieces can be quickly accomplished in CAD.

remark

If possible buy genuine energy chains as they are higher quality and not that expensive.

If this isn't an option (e.g. recycling/reusing old chains or desire for parts that aren't for sale by the first party) keep in mind you might need to adjust the tolerances for the hub and mating elements as 3D-printed designs heavily depend on them (20 µm can be the difference between perfect and okayish). This is also the reason why I had to print a dozen of prototypes before settling on the final design which is good enough for the task.

How to choose the right energy chain?

First and foremost do your reading on how drag chains work. Manufacturers have nice and short whitepaper teaching you enough to start out:

e.g. Lapp: https://lappchina.lappgroup.com/fileadmin/DAM/Lapp_China/Catalogue/Whitepaper_Cable_Chain_Engineering_Guideline_EN.pdf

Once you have this basic understanding estimate the largest bend radius you can fit (the larger the better). The next step looking up which cables need to run through the chain. Once this is done finally you can think about the chain which will be used and if there need to be additional chambers/separating elements.

useful tools for Igus chains:

cable lifetime estimated: https://www.igus.com/ChainflexTools/ServiceLifeCalculator

interior design: https://echain-expert.igus.tools/manual-flow-entry/chain
