They are hard for enemy ships to detect due to their small size and when massed in numbers they can pose a threat to even large ships. The Utility escort was originally used as a mining vessel stripping asteroids for resources. But their high armour and that they were cheap build and run meant with minor modifications they quickly became widely used for combat operations. Eventually a dedicated combat ship was built that proved effective in fast armoured wings using hit and run tactics.
