How this project started:

After researching VOCs I'm still more comfortable exhausting them out of the house when dealing with things like ABS. I do have a really good air filter with a carbon filter, plus HEPA/carbon scrubbers inside the enclosure.

Description

I'm continuing to modify my NextGen enclosure, so it works for the space and setup I have. This is an addition to my enclosure exhaust fan design:

NextGen Enclosure Exhaust Fan Adapter by AKA | Download free STL model | Printables.com

This filter is for fumes from PLA or PETG if you happen to have a brand that puts off an unpleasant odor. I had a few rolls and wanted to help clear the air a bit better.

This is NOT a professional grade air scrubber/purifier and should not be considered and effective remedy for removing toxic VOCs and fumes.

For ABS, ASA and other filaments that put off toxic fumes when printing I recommend venting out of the house/work area completely.

Parts List:

Next Gen Enclosure Exhaust Fan adapter listed above

Roomba 800/900 Replacement Filter x2

Ex: Amazon.com - MZY LLC 12 Pack Hepa Filter Filters Replacement For irobot Roomba 800 900 series 860 870 871 880 960 980 Robotic Vacuum Parts -

Activated Charcoal (for fish tank or other source)

Storage container when not in use

Print Settings:

Default PrusaSlicer settings for PETG @ 0.30mm quality (PLA would probably be fine as well)

Supports: None

Assembly:

Place a layer of activated charcoal in the bottom of the printed filter module. Use a paper town or something similar. It's messy.

Shake gently to remove any smaller/loose bits (you also don't want the dust to go everywhere).

Place the two Roomba filters on the top of the printed part, push in place firmly.

The entire assembly fits into the slots on the top of the exhaust fan assembly.

When not in use, remove and place in an airtight container to help preserve the activated charcoal.

Change Log:

10-31-2022

Added Filter Attachment_R2: Expanded lip around full bottom edge for easier placement and a better seal.
