GrabCAD
One of the most powerful aspects of incorporating 3D printing into art is the ability to seamlessly integrate complex mechanisms that add an entirely new dimension to the piece, dynamically bringing it to life.
This design is inspired by the Hoberman sphere; the intricate movement of the mechanism is fascinating. It is incredible to see the increase in spherical diameter that is possible with what is at its core a very simple mechanism. The outside of the sphere mimics planet earth. Hidden in the core of the earth is a decorative heart design, that rotates as the sphere expands – symbolising the universal love that is central to a functioning world.
The model would ideally be printed using a PolyJet printer. The ‘Main_assembly.stl’ file fits within the dimension criteria of the challenge. Although removing the support material may be quite time consuming, it will allow the entire assembly to be printed in one piece. Using a multi-colour PolyJet printer would allow of the colour options seen in the renders. The design is also densely packed which will minimise support material usage. Alternatively, the model can be printed using FDM technology, however this would require quite a lot of assembly. There are no significant stresses on the structure, therefore a FEA study is not needed.
