Experimental Blower Housing for a Recycled Hard Drive

This started as an experiment to see what I could do with an old motor from a hard drive. I had a bunch of loose motors left over from harvesting the magnets from them. So I picked one of the motors that seemed to be the fastest, and least annoying sound wise and started sketching something up in Fusion 360, and came up with a fairly functional fume extractor! See the video below.

I am only sharing the Fusion file, as I have no way of knowing what size the hub will be on the drive you might choose to recycle. The motors I had on hand did not have a universal hub size. I also make no warranty to the proficiency of my Fusion skills. I am sure many will not find it pretty, also none of it is parametric, as I had no plans to mess with this further after I satisfied my curiosity. But a request was made in the comments of the video for the files, and it is easier to share here, than on YouTube.

There are 2 different fan designs in the file. See the pictures for examples.

Not only will you need an old hard drive for the motor, you will need some way of controlling the motor. I used this motor controller. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B087YSGGQY

Maybe you will use some entirely different motor? I would be interested in seeing it the makes!

<oembed url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5og9Zh77Npo"></oembed>
