Ruston Hornsby 48 like experimental train. See https://youtu.be/vt8ymzGw3Bg When I created this thing the objective was to create a train using different versions of the cheap motor N20 with the use of 18650 batteries and a double 18650 battery holder and playing with gears. As base I take the sales drawings of the Ruston Hornsby DS48 and fitted that to 32mm gauge and to the double 18650 battery holder. The function was important not the form, so train fanatics will be disappointed. For the ones that uses this thing I warn: 18650 batteries contain a lot of energy, shortcircuit or depleting the batteries too much is dangerous and can cause a fire. (is not childs play stuff) The following parts are taken from thingiverse thing “EMD GP38/39-inspired freight locomotive for OS-Railway” by Depronized: : - Gear 11T TransferGear - Gear 11T wheel shaft gear - CenterBevelGear (modified version) Also the software I used (and changed) was created by Depronized. Many many thanks to Depronized for his work! Changes to the software: - For handling the DRV8833 motor driver - Give reply number back after sending a command - An attempt to measure the voltage of the battery with the A0 port (got different results not all of them were reliable) - Added a button to get the battery voltage - Stop the motor and blink the LED’s when the battery voltage is too low. For the electronics I used the D1 mini (ESP8266) in combination with DRV8833 motor driver and a separate voltage regulator. The voltage regulator of the D1 mini can handle a maximum input voltage of 5.5 V. Two 18650 full loaded batteries can deliver a voltage of 8.4V, is too much for the D1 mini. The choice for the D1 mini was the size, reliability and price. I tried an ESP32 but the start and restart behaviour was not reliable. Network: As in the design of Depronized, you can communicate with the train with Wifi. I used a separate D1 mini to create my own separate network (softap). This worked well with 5 trains and my laptop on this separate network. Later I used a raspberry pi with router software. In the source of the D1 mini on the train I had a table with mac addresses and ip adresses to use fixed IP addresses. The source is a changed version of the source of Depronized. For the trains I used the following types of N20 motors: 4.5V 72 rpm 4.5V 230 rpm 6V 300 rpm The best results I got with the 230 rpm motor (range min speed – max speed).
